Phillips Community College of University of Arkansas — Helena-West Helena Campus

This 34-credit Technical Certificate combines six general-education credits with 28 credits of required welding study. Required welding courses cover introductory welding and thermal cutting, SMAW, advanced structural applications, GTAW, and GMAW. Students receive hands-on welding-booth practice and develop skills in pipe and plate welding, welding setup, metal properties, joint work, cutting, and interpreting prints. Three 15-credit welding Certificates of Proficiency are embedded in the pathway.

This 15-credit Certificate of Proficiency combines Introduction to Welding, Arc Welding I, and Inert Gas Welding I. Students receive hands-on welding-booth practice in introductory thermal cutting and oxyacetylene welding, SMAW on mild steel, and GTAW/GMAW. This 15-credit Certificate of Proficiency requires Introduction to Welding and two Inert Gas Welding courses. Students practice GTAW and GMAW on carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and other ferrous and nonferrous alloys, along with introductory oxyacetylene welding and multiple thermal-cutting processes. This 15-credit Certificate of Proficiency requires Introduction to Welding plus Arc Welding I and II. Students develop SMAW skills on mild steel in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions, work with light-gauge and structural steels, and receive introductory oxyacetylene-welding and thermal-cutting experience. Official outcomes include V-butt joints on plate steel and pipe fitting, and the credential is offered at all three campuses.
